Details: Trump suggested that a meeting of world leaders, which Putin is said to have proposed, could take place without Zelenskyy’s participation.
“Anything I can do to end the war, whether somebody’s there or not. If President Xi wants to have it, I’d have it. I’m sure we’d talk about other things like trade too. But yeah, I would do that,” he told reporters.
His comments came amid steadily rising tensions between Trump and Zelenskyy in recent weeks, while Russia has received a series of concessions from the US.
Trump initially said he was more interested in discussing “denuclearisation” with Putin and Xi, remarking: “Russia, frankly, has been fine on Ukraine. They haven’t been doing much.”
When asked about Zelenskyy’s criticism of Trump’s recent decision to cancel new sanctions against Russia as well as the Ukrainian president’s recent claim that the US president was on the wrong side of history, Trump once again lashed out at the Ukrainian leader.
“Zelenskyy doesn’t know what he’s talking about. Zelenskyy is a man that should have had this war settled a long time ago. I think it’s time for somebody else to negotiate on behalf of Ukraine,” Trump added, reiterating his previous call for Kyiv to “get a new president”.
